The Oklahoma Parents Center (OPC) would like to announce our upcoming 11th Annual Statewide Conference “Building Relationships…Creating Successful Change” on Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Midwest City Hotel at the Reed Conference Center, 5750 Will Rogers Road, Midwest City, Oklahoma.
This conference is designed to educate parents, families and professionals in building partnerships that meet the needs of children and youth with the full range of disabilities ages’ birth to 26. As with every statewide conference, there will be great speakers, much information shared, lunch, and plenty of door prizes.
We expect this year’s conference to be a huge success with expected attendance of 300!
Special Guest Presenter will be
Perry A. Zirkel
Perry A. Zirkel is university professor of education and law at Lehigh University, where he formerly was dean of the College of Education and more recently held the Iacocca Chair in Education for its five-year term. He has a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and a J.D. from the University of Connecticut, and a Master of Laws degree from Yale University. He has written more than 1,475 publications on various aspects of school law, with an emphasis on legal issues in special education. He writes regular columns for Principal magazine and NASP’s Communiqué, and did so previously for Phi Delta Kappan and Teaching Exceptional Children. Past president of the Education Law Association (ELA) and co-chair of the Pennsylvania special education appeals panel from 1990 to 2007, he is the author of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) monograph The Legal Meaning of Specific Learning Disability; the more recent books, A Digest of Supreme Court Decisions Affecting Education and Student Teaching and the Law; and the two-volume reference Section 504, the ADA and the Schools, now in its fourth edition. In 2012, he received Research into Practice Award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the Excellence in Research Award from AERA’s Division A (Administration, Organization & Leadership). In 2013, he received the University Council for Educational Administration’s Edwin Bridges award for significant contributions to the preparation and development of school leaders. In 2016, he received the ELA’s Steven S. Goldberg Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Education Law. In April 2017, he will receive CEC’s Special Education Research Award.
How Can I Register?
The conference is limited to the first 300 people that register. All others will be placed on a waiting list. There is no fee for this year’s conference; however, you must register.

How Much Does The Conference Cost?
There is no fee for this year’s conference – however, you must register to attend.
Will Childcare Be Provided?
No, unfortunately, the Oklahoma Parents Center will not have any accommodations for children at the conference. Please make other arrangements for your children.
However, there is a $50 scholarship for parents of children with disabilities to help with the cost of childcare.
How Can I Apply For A Scholarship?
A limited number of $50 scholarships are available for participants with financial need, with primary consideration given to individuals with disabilities and their families. The stipends are available on a first come, first serve basis.

How Can I Be An Exhibitor At Your Conference?
An Exhibitor Booth at the Oklahoma Parents Center Conference will introduce your products and/or services to participants from all areas of Oklahoma. Booth Rental is $100.00 per table, which includes registration for 2 and meals provided. The non-profit rate is $50.00 per table – to receive this rate, please send your verification with your Booth Rental Form.

How Do I Book A Hotel Room?
The Sheraton Midwest City Hotel at the Reed Conference Center has reserved a limited number of rooms for conference participants at a special rate of $ 89.00 per night, single/double – room rates are subject to state and local taxes. Reservations must be made on or before April 24, 2017 to qualify for the conference rate.
How Can I Nominate Someone For The Sixth Annual “Parent of the Year” Award?
The Oklahoma Parents Center is excited to be able to honor a special parent again this year. This award is for parents of children with disabilities who have demonstrated an ‘above and beyond’ approach for the child, school, and/or community. The winner and the nominator will both win an iPad and an all expenses paid trip to the Statewide Conference!

How Can I Nominate Someone For The Fifth Annual “Educator of the Year” Award?
The Oklahoma Parents Center is thrilled to be honoring a special educator in Oklahoma for the fifth year. This award is for educators who have contributed to their students, school and community and/or served as a positive role model for their students and the community. The winner and the nominator will both win an iPad and an all expenses paid trip to the Statewide Conference!

How Can I Submit Artwork For The “Who Is Your Hero” Fifth Annual Art Contest?
The Oklahoma Parents Center wants to know, “Who is Your Hero?” We are inviting all Oklahoma special education students to submit their original works of art that demonstrates the idea of a hero. Maybe your hero is a relative, a friend, a historical figure or a person from a story. Share your hero with us!!! The winning students and teacher in each category will both be awarded a gift card.
